How Digital Minimalism Can Boost Creativity

ok so like I never thought i’d actually care about “digital minimalism” lol but here we are. i realized the more i scroll tiktok or twitter the less i actually THINK. like my brain feels like mashed potatoes that someone forgot in the fridge too long. for real. so then i read a bit about digital minimalism and at first I was like yeah yeah whatever, another lifehack. but then i tried some stuff and omg, my brain felt… like it finally got air. it’s not about quitting your phone or moving to the woods or whatever. it’s about like choosing what actually matters and ignoring the rest. and when i did that, my ideas started popping out randomly. one day i literally made a note of like three project ideas in 20 minutes and i had been stuck on them for weeks.

why our brains hate notifications

so apparently there’s this thing called “continuous partial attention” (sounds fancy, right?) basically our brains get fried because we are switching constantly from notifications to emails to memes to random thoughts to what’s for lunch. it’s exhausting and kills creativity. but if you let your brain chill for a bit—like even just muting some apps or leaving your phone somewhere else for a few hours—you suddenly start noticing stuff. i mean real stuff. the clouds look different. people’s shoes are weird. patterns start popping into your head. it’s small things but your brain loves it.

trying digital minimalism irl

so like i tried this in tiny ways first. instead of grabbing my phone first thing, i grabbed a notebook (i know lol very retro). i just scribbled random thoughts, sketches, weird ideas that might seem dumb later. it worked. i also noticed small joys. like overhearing weird cafe convos, noticing dogs in ridiculous outfits, things i used to scroll past without thinking. my friend joked i became “mysteriously more interesting” after a couple weeks. not sure if serious but i’ll take it.

and social media people are weird about this. saw a reddit comment like “I can’t go 5 mins without my phone, how do i even do this?” and i felt that. totally relatable. it’s hard. we’re addicted to dopamine from likes and shares. but even small steps work. like leaving your phone in another room while cooking or jotting ideas down before they vanish. tiny, tiny stuff but your brain notices.

being intentional with tech

another thing i realized is tech isn’t evil. it’s just that we use it badly. i started using my tablet only for reading or brainstorming, nothing else. instagram got cut to like 15 mins a day because honestly seeing everyone’s perfect avocado toast was stressing me out. it’s not avoiding creativity—it’s inviting it. and wow, when i’m intentional, my creative flow feels way more real. no “did i reply to that whatsapp?” in the back of my head. suddenly patterns in thoughts appear and those tiny lightbulb moments feel legit.

small steps lead to big ideas

ok so I know this sounds super chill or maybe woo-woo but it works. i felt my ideas get fresher, even dumb stuff like emails or cooking felt less like a chore. i started noticing tiny things like music without scrolling, doodling in line at grocery store (ok maybe weird but whatever). it’s little things adding up.

it doesn’t have to be extreme. you don’t need to delete all apps or live in a cabin. just one focused project, one hour of uninterrupted thinking. suddenly your brain feels awake, alive, like finally getting a mini-vacation. and honestly for anyone juggling 10 digital things at once, it helps a LOT. not just productivity, your creativity actually grows and you notice sparks you didn’t even know were there.
